BELHARRA Syrah “Las Madres” 2014

A seductive, spicy, classic cool-climate Syrah nose of concentrated blueberries, black olive, black licorice and menthol moves to flavors of more wild blueberry, cherry cough drop, black pepper, bay leaf and lavender. Northern-Rhone style with California ripeness (label says 14.5%…I’m guessing it’s closer to 14.0). Balanced, layered, fruity, bright and just a little “wild,” this is a big-time pick for lovers of cool-climate California Syrah. BELHARRA Rosé of Syrah 2017

Ripe raspberry, black pepper, pomegranate and dried lavender hit the nose quick. Taste more of the same along with some dark strawberry and candied orange peel. Medium-bodied for Rosé, freshness from cool-climate acidity, robust enough to pair with grilled, full-flavored meats and vegis (as expected from Syrah Rosé). If you’re having a Rose themed dinner party, start with something lighter (like the Vivier) and then move to Belharra Rosé of Syrah. BELHARRA Sauvignon Blanc 2018

All the enviable flavors of Sauvignon Blanc make an appearance in this all steel tank ferment and aged Sauvignon Blanc. Lemon, grapefruit, green apple, peach, green fleshed melon, mango. None of them overwhelm. Same for the garden lemongrass and basil: present and subtle. Light bodied, medium/high acidity, fresh as can be. I like how the Belharra Sauvignon Blanc is made to compliment whatever you’re eating with it. 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Napa’s Pope Valley. BELHARRA Chardonnay 2017

More toasty fresh biscuit and cream than sweet butter, the Belharra Chardonnay “The Search” delivers the texture and body of Chardonnay while keeping a fresh, bright quality. I get fresh peaches, ripe red apples, cantaloupe, tropical fruits (pineapple & papaya), fresh bread crust and a honeysuckle/citrus blossom edge. Can’t help but like this Chardonnay. That said, it’s first & foremost for fans of no-butter Chards. More Information Belharra is a new, micro-winery owned, made and operated by two ladies with notable day jobs. BELHARRA Syrah Las Madres 2016

Retasted December 2019:  Ripe, brooding blueberry and blackberry fruits injected with smoke, peppercorns, licorice and black olive. Over time the fruitiness has stood up more, now going toe to toe with the natural Syrah spiciness I always get from “Las Madres Vineyard” Syrah. Full bodied, suave tannins, medium acidity. This drinks great without food but still belongs on the dinner table. Earlier this year I suggested Pulled Pork with a Cider/Vinegar Sauce.  Today, I suggest a classic Syrah dish – Coffee-Braised Beef Short Ribs. (add a half cup of the Belharra Syrah to the pot.)   More Information Belharra is a […]

BELHARRA Rose of Syrah 2018

Get red plums, strawberries, raspberries, cracked black and white pepper and a whiff of violets in the Belharra Rose of Syrah. Dry and light, showing more subtlety than most Syrah Rosé wines I taste. Careful lees-stirring adds texture to the wine without going overboard. This is all Syrah from “Las Madres Vineyard” Carneros. Picked early and pressed for Rosé. This is fermented and aged in stainless steel tank with some lees-stirring for texture. Stylistically, this falls in between the white wine-esque Provence types and the fruitier Southern Rhone style. Belharra Syrah Las Madres 2017

A big nose of smoky, peppery, licoricey blackberries and violets introduce you to the 2017 Belharra Las Madres Syrah. Berries galore in the mouth, yet Syrah’s distinctive character is the star: bittersweet chocolate, smoked strip steak, leather handbag and anise. This cohesive, intense, “very Syrah” Syrah is a delicious, rich red wine. French oak aged…20% new. 14.5% alcohol. From Belharra: “Sonoma had an ideal growing season in 2017, and Las Madres showcases a fantastically rich Syrah. Rendered fat and beef broth intensify the classic crushed violets on the nose. The richness and roundness continue on the pallet with elements of […]

Belharra Rose of Syrah 2020

This “intentional Rose” made from 100% Syrah from “Las Madres” smells of raspberries, yellow plums, cracked peppercorns and pink rose petals. Textural and a little creamy in the mouth, it reminds me of the more substantial Provence Roses in this way. I taste red apple, apricots, blood orange and tarragon along with perky acidity and just a little creaminess that coats the roof of my mouth. I’d love to drink this with a summertime BLT, full of smoky thick-cut bacon, crispy lettuce and garden-ripe tomatoes. From the winery: “The seventh edition of our direct-press Rosé carries a structured stonefruit on […]

Share this page on:[socialpug_share] The Age of Coronavirus has put a temporary hold on DDWA tasting events. As infection surges ebb and flow and we wonder about the future, so too do I wonder what form my tasting events will take. And when.  For the moment (mid June 2020) my tasting events at Napa Valley Wine Academy and Southside are not scheduled. How and where I will produce my events is not currently known. Winery-focused events are in the works, but it's impossible to know for sure that they can happen.  Below is a list of past and cancelled tasting […]
