VILLA RAGAZZI Sangiovese 2014

All Calistoga fruit, which as the hottest AVA of Napa Valley belies the old-world style of this wine. All red fruits here (raspberry sauce, cranberry, wild red cherry) with intriguing savory qualities like beef broth, cremini mushroom, pink grapefruit and pink peppercorns. At 13.3% alcohol, shining acidity and low oak influence, this is easily confused for Tuscany (Italy) Sangiovese.  Optimal drinking: 2019-2029. From February 2019 tasting: It’s a lovely wine. Raspberries, wild red cherries, red roses, black tea, bay leaf, new leather and energetic acidity shine bright. Built on a foundation of 13.3% alcohol and not-new French oak aging. I tasted […]

Villa Ragazzi “Faraona” Napa Valley 2014

“Super Tuscan” style blend of 75% Sangiovese and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is powerful like a lady gymnast rather than a male weightlifter.  Black currant, dark raspberry, cedar, orange tea and tobacco smells and flavors all tightly packed into this intense, youthful wine whose best days are well ahead of it (2025-2030 best drinking I think). 13.6% alcohol, medium/high tannins, low oak influence by Napa standards. If I had a child born in 2014 this would definitely make my birth year collection.   The Rodeno Family, owners and winemakers of Villa Ragazzi, take Sangiovese seriously. Their Oakville home and vineyard […]

VILLA RAGAZZI Rosato di Sangiovese 2017

“Purposeful” Rosato: Sangiovese picked early, pressed off. High acid, low alcohol. Real crisp…lemons, citron, tart cherry, ruby grapefruit. Undertones of thyme and white pepper. Every sip makes me smile from the brilliant acidity. This is really well done for the crispest style of Rosé wine. The Rodeno Family, owners and winemakers of Villa Ragazzi, take Sangiovese seriously. Their Oakville home and vineyard grows it (along with some Cabernet Sauvignon) and they make it in a truly “old world” style, which is equal parts savory and fruity. The Villa Ragazzi wines are made to age. Waiting ten years, as I suggest […]

You will be a better Rosé Lover after you read this five minute article. Yes, a better Rosé Lover. Allow me to explain. Read most lists of wine recommendations, say it's called "10 Top Rosés for Summer" in a national lifestyle magazine, and you're left hanging. No guidance on how to buy them or way to figure out if it's a Rosé that YOU will like. My Rosé list addresses both matters to help you drink Rosé like the star you are. This is how: I advise on the best places to find and buy the wine. I've made Rosé wine tasting questionnaire […]

Share this page on:[socialpug_share]   Wish you could be a wine-tasting insider? You know, taste wine with the winemakers. Maybe a little barrel tasting. Here’s your chance. I often hit the wine road to taste, catch up with friends in the wine business and find new wines to recommend to the wine-world.
