100% 100+ year old vine Mourvedre from the Sacramento Delta (vineyard is near the town of Pittsburg). Generous amounts of dark plum, blueberry and blackberry fruit, nicely complemented by Mourvedre’s black licorice, earthy truffle, crusty cigar wrapper and black pepper flavors. Good, brightening acidity and fine, firm tannins. Ready to enjoy now…fantastic choice for a “house wine” because of its versatility with food as well as its tastiness on its own. The value speaks for itself. One of my highest ever Value Ratings of 5.6 – Hall of Fame Value.
If you know Mourvedre a little bit or a lot, it’s meaningful to say what this wine isn’t. Without getting geeky, let me just say it doesn’t have the “funk” associated with the grape. If you’d like more of an explanation, write me and I’ll go deeper.
You’ll notice the bottle only says “California Table Wine.” When you receive, do what I did and write Mourvedre on the front label (I wrote “MV”).
Becheur is winemaker Michael Terrien’s negociant label. In his words, “Here at Bêcheur you will find wines I have dug up from my friends’ wineries and which I offer to you because otherwise they would become a casualty of California’s grape glut and get blended for sale on the bulk market. Bêcheur is just a way for you to buy a nice wine at cost.”
