Very Good Value

The hillside, volcanic rock/soil, 50 year old vines of “Montecillo” dictate the character of this wine, which is exactly what Camino’s Tadeo Borchardt intends. The Camino Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 leads with savory non-fruit, then has the dark berry/cherry fruits sneak up on you. Get musk, dark tobacco, smoky cherry, dark earth, soy sauce, dried green peppercorns, blackberries on the bush and ready to pick. There are firm tannins, to be expected from this wine and this vineyard, yet they soften with ample amounts of air and the right types of food (ribeye steak perhaps?). All that said, best to cellar this wine and drink 2025-2035. 105 cases made.

More Information

Napa producer Camino is made, owned and operated by Tadeo Borchardt, also the long-time winemaker at Neyers Vineyard. He makes tiny amounts of three wines: this Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Cab vineyard, “Montecillo” was planted in 1964 above the Sonoma Valley in volcanic rock. Personally, I absolutely love this Cabernet and choose it for myself over the voluptuous fruit-forward Napa Valley Cabs.

All of Borchardt’s wines are both full-flavored and full of pleasing uniqueness. And tiny production: about 300 cases made total of his three current wines on the market.
