Cochon Pape Rocks Red Wine

COCHON “Pape Rocks” 2015

70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault. An ode to Châteauneuf du Pape at a much better price than most CdPs. For $21, this wine is ridiculously good. Brooding, dark berry fruits with Rhone-like complements of black olive, black pepper, dark soy, mint and lavender. Robust, fruity and spicy finish with ripe tannins that give structure but don’t dry your mouth out. This is a real find for wine lovers, especially fans of Southern Rhone and Cal-Rhone red blends.  Most of the fruit in Pape Rocks comes from Lodi and nearby. Great fruit, but “affordable,” allowing a $21 price […]

Jolie Laide Rose 17

JOLIE LAIDE Rosé of Valdiguié 2017

Sonoma winery Jolie-Laide sources Valdiguie (known for decades in CA as Napa Gamay) from “Buddha Dharma Vineyard,” City of 10,000 Buddhas outside of Ukiah. Wild strawberry and red plum and peppery spice flavors remind me of Grenache Rosé. The twinge of Amaro-esque bitterness takes it another direction, however. Round, curvy texture on the end comes from part concrete tank and neutral oak fermentation and brief aging. More Information Owner/winemaker Scott Schultz does an awesome job making his wines concurrently delicious and interesting. It’s one of two wine lists I am on because they can be hard to get, are always […]

Rogstad Pinot Noir Tidrik

ROGSTAD Pinot Noir “Tidrik” 2015

Spot-on tasty, cool climate California Pinot from Napa winemaking veteran Steven Rogstad. Get sappy red cherries and cranberry sauce on the nose along with pretty violet and pink rose notes. There’s a lightness to this wine that borders on ethereal. Bright, solid core of red fruits in the mouth, then savory on the finish with black tea and tarragon peaking in. Has just enough oak to bolster the grape and place. Steven Rogstad is a big “sense of place” proponent, and strives to show that in his Pinot Noirs. He’s done a heck of a job of this in his […]
