Fresh lime zest and juice, riper Eureka lemon, grapefruit, green apple and lemon blossoms define the style of the 2016 Green & Red Sauvignon Blanc. Medium high acidity and fresh citrus basket fruits point to very light bodied wine, but not totally the case here. 2% Viognier, a recent addition to Green & Red Vineyard, adds aromatics and a texture. It’s nuanced…I noticed it only when I was told of the Viognier. This is a classic, mouth-watering aperitivo Sauv Blanc best enjoyed at the beginning of the meal. “Fish wine” for sure!
Jay Heminway purchased the property that would become “Chiles Mill Vineyard” and his home in 1970 and started planting vines in 1972. 1977 was his first vintage. Jay and wife Pam “grew up” with the Chez Panisse-led California Cuisine movement, which includes supplying Chez Panisse with their “house red” for decades. The Green & Red story is an important chapter in the California food movement of the 20th century. I am fortunate to know, drink, enjoy and understand Green & Red over the past 25 years.
