“Massiglia” (the ancient name of Marseilles, the French Mediterranean home-town of owner Maurice Marciano) is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Cabernet Franc. It is owned, grown and made and by Marciano Estate Winery in western St Helena. This is a generous, very rich, provocative red that, at first whiff, you know it’s one of Napa’s top-tier wines. Deep, strong dark red and black cherry liqueur, cocoa, baking spice and cola aromas move gracefully to a rich, lush, deep and frankly “yummy” flavor and texture. Mocha, cedar and warm chocolate croissant also come to mind, then a finish of fruit, barrel and an earth-driven crushed rock/black truffle. For uniqueness of character and drink-me-now deliciousness, this is hard to beat at any price level.
The property that is now Marciano Estate was purchased by Maurice Marciano in 2006. In 2007 he hired Dave Abreu to replant his entire vineyard. The wines are made by Morgan Maurèze whose resume includes Dominus, Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Château Haut-Brion, Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle. Andy Erickson is the consulting winemaker. (It’s the Napa Valley version of The Three Tenors!) At just 7th leaf for the 2014 vintage, the best is yet to come for Marciano Estate.
