Obsidian Wine Co owns and farms two estate vineyards at opposite ends of the topography spectrum. There’s the coolest Carneros “Poseidon Vineyard” bordering the San Pablo Bay and the sun-soaked, arid, volcanic soil of “Obsidian Ridge Vineyard.” No other small winery (I call them a larger small winery) offers their customers such vast styles of high-quality wines. Launched with a 2002 harvest of Obsidian Ridge Cabernet (a whopping 4 barrels made) by co-founders Arpad Molnar, Peter Molnar and Michael Terrien, the company has expanded to around 20 employees and 20 wines per vintage. Winemaker Alex Beloz crafts the single vineyard wines. Casey Graybehl oversees the “Rabbit Hole Project” that focuses on creative and slightly crazy sparkling wines (like the Pezsgő I revew), vermouths and such.
All Obsidian Wine Co wines are available winery-direct, including club-member only wines (I’ve reviewed two club only below). “Poseidon Vineyard” Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and “Obsidian Ridge Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon can be found in selected markets around the U.S. To my taste, these are the best super-premium quality wines for the money made in California.
