The perfumed, sweet spice and strawberry preserves nose flies from the glass in this translucent, brilliant-colored red from the top of Mount Veeder. Taste ripe summer red berries and cherries with candied ginger, cinnamon and Earl Grey tea. Reminds me of strong Pinot Noir in its medium-bodied, satin texture. Great, smooth, long finish of cherry compote, pie spice, lavender and vanilla. A Pinot Noir-drinker’s wine for sure.
About RELIC
Relic Wine Cellars is co-owned by husband/wife Mike Hirby (the winemaker) and Schatzi Throckmorton. They launched Relic with the 2001 vintage (I think I carried their first release at Back Room Wines in 2003). They now make around ten wines each vintage from their winery on Napa’s Soda Canyon Road (a great place to visit, by the way…appointment needed). You are assured of drinking a very good if not great wine if it is from Relic. While their wines run from the low $50s to $100/bottle, by premium/luxury Napa wine standards they are very good values.
