One of the best earth and spice-driven Zinfandels I’ve had. Napa winery Leaf & Vine has bought Zinfandel from this Story Winery block of Zinfandel in Plymouth at the heart of Gold Country. Ripe black and blueberry core is tamed by potent sensations of black olive tapenade, bramble, black pepper, sasparilla and mint. Brooding and complex with healthy tannins and very little oak influence. These are descriptors that point to wines signifcantly higher than $25.
75% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 5% Cinsault from the heart of the Languedoc, 30 miles from the Mediterranean & 50 miles from The Rhone Valley. Syrah’s lavender, dark raspberry and black peppercorn personality jumps out at first. With ample air, more fruit, texture and savory qualities arrive. Kalamata olive, blueberry sauce, dark strawberry, rosemary. At $22 (or less), Rhone/Rhone-style fans should load up on this.
Blend is approximately 1/3rd Petite Sirah, 1/3rd Carignane, 1/5th Zinfandel, 1/5th Grenache. 60 year old, head-trained vines in northeast Mendocino County. Co-ferment in classic “field blend” tradition. Neutral French oak aged. Bold flavors of black and blue fruits with integrated black pepper, pie spice, cocoa and anise notes. Medium/low acidity, smooth tannins and restrained (14.0%) alcohol. For a bigger red, this is very easy to drink. Post & Vine Owners/Winemakers Rebekah Wineburg and Erica Kinkaid both have “day jobs” making super-high end (and pricey) Napa Valley Cabernets and such. Post & Vine is their passion-project. I so love this wine, […]
